FIFA’s “new assistant”
After a series of successful tests, the semi-automatic offside detection technology (SAOT) was officially applied in the 2022 World Cup . This technology is an improvement from the widely adopted VAR (video arbitration assistance system).
Use 12 specialized surveillance cameras to track the ball and 29 data points on the players to create 3D simulations. Technology helps to pinpoint and issue warnings about offside situations. FIFA expects SAOT to support the referee in making the most accurate decisions, avoiding small errors that affect the outcome of the whole match.
FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, said that although these technologies are improved, they still play an important role in making final decisions.

Interesting information about the World Cup 2022
As a leading annual sporting event on the planet, the 2022 World Cup is also a special milestone in the tournament’s history. FIFA has made many changes to better accommodate historical fluctuations.
This is the second World Cup to take place in Asia (after the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea) and the first to be held in a Middle Eastern country. The tournament also marks the last World Cup with 32 participating teams, as the number of teams participating will increase to 48 in the next tournament.
As usual, the 2022 World Cup is scheduled to be held in the summer (around June and July). However, summer temperatures in Qatar reach more than 40 degrees Celsius, extremely difficult for players and fans to participate. Therefore, FIFA has officially made the decision to move the tournament to winter (starting from November 21). This was also the first time in history that the tournament was held around this time.
Up to the time of the group draw, only 29/32 teams were determined to participate in the 2022 World Cup final. The reason is due to the intense war between Russia and Ukraine, so the last Play-off matches have been postponed
